"Advanced Gymnastics"  Gymnasts Scores at Junior Olympic Level 9 Western Nationals & Level 10 Nationals

How do you end sixteen years of club gymnastics?  You have the most successful meet of your career.   At the Junior Olympic Western Nationals held in St. Louis, Mo., May 9-11, Desi Torrey, a senior at Columbia High School and a gymnast at Advanced Gymnastics in Nampa, did just that.  In a sport that requires the athlete to compete in four events and at a National meet to hit all four events to be a top finisher, the competition is tough.  Torrey hit all four events: that means she had no falls and minimal errors in her routines as she competed against 49 other gymnasts in her Senior D age group.  Her meet started on floor with a finely executed routine that scored a 9.45 for 10th place medal ranking.  Consistency in her routines on the other events also earned her individual  medal honors iin vault with a 9.075 for a tenth place and beam with a 9.275 for fourth place.  Her strong overall performance gave her a final all-around ranking of third place with a 36.75 score.

As first year Level 9 competitors and first year qualifiers to a national meet, Torrey's team mates who were in different age groups faced some extremely tough competition also.  Nicole Johnson, Junior A age group, had her best finish on beam with an 8.975 for 22nd place.  Jade Roberts also had her best finish on beam with an 8.9 for 24th place.

The Level 10 Junior Olympic National Competition held in Kissimmee, Florida, May 16-18 featured 450 competitors in eight age groups with competitors from across the country.  Micaela Barr, competed in the Senior D age group.  Suffering with a head cold, Micaela had her best event score on floor for an 8.775, 46th place finish.  The experience of national competition inspires these gymnasts to work to improve their skills and develop their athletic abilities.

Advanced Gymnastics,

Hello! My name is Dawn K. I called your office last Thursday and spoke to someone about checking out your gym. (I also came by last Thursday from 12:30 - 1:30 to watch your level 5 girls work out.) I have a 12 year old daughter who is with another local gym. She competed last year as a first time level 4, and wants to move up to level 5 this year. As much a I love our gym and it's coaches, I do not feel that my daughter will be able to reach her goals. Please don't read anything into this, I do love her coaches very much, however, when I came and watched your gym I saw a REAL workout. Since I liked what I saw, I was hoping that my daughter could work out with your level 5 girls to see if she could get a little more up to speed, while also seeing if Sam is a good fit with your girls and your coaches. Since our gym is big on positive affirmation, I am nervous that she may not know how to handle hard-core coaching. The coaching that I saw at AG seemed to be a good balance of positive with more directed instruction.

I am more than happy to pay for her lessons, I'm not looking for a free-bee.

Please feel free to use any or all of this email. We have been nothing but pleased by your coaching! Please add this on to the above message to include that Sammy not only moved up a level, but increased her scores as well! We never thought that she was capable of such scores, especially bars! Sam literally went from scoring 6's to 8's. Thank you for all of your hard work and dedication.

Thanks so much, I look forward to hearing from you. Dawn K.

Hello Janet and Bob,

My parents and us thoroughly enjoyed this meet. Terry and I know that this meet was one of the best in our memories. It wasn't her placing that it made it more memorable, but the look of complete happiness that had shone in her face. Placing was just the icing on the cake. This meet embodied what the sport was all about. Having goals set and accomplishing them. After her bar return Nicole turned to us with a such a huge smile on her face and a glow in her eyes! That look meant more to us than all the 1st awards combined. After the meet she came up to me and said."Mom, I made all my goals this meet!" I could see how proud she was of herself, and how important it was to have those little goals. They were not goals of getting the perfect score, but the small and very obtainable personal goals. Placing was the added extra excitement. Not all the dollars in the world could replace the memory in my heart of the big grin and shiny look in her eyes that she had that day. Thank-you for giving her those small but very meaningful goals which obviously meant a whole lot to her.

Saundra and Terry
